چکیده

A quantitative understanding of the mechanism of human dental enamel dissolution in buffers is important because it should lead to a clear description of the causative factors in caries formation, and it can be profitably employed in the design of meaningful screening methods for potential anti-decay agents. Gray' has reported studies on enamel dissolution, concluding that the rates of dissolution of enamel in his buffers were controlled by the diffusion rates of the reactants and products of the dissolution reaction. He also pointed out that the initial enamel dissolution rate is largely a function of the total buffer concentration, buffer acid strength, and pH. The effects of common and foreign ions on the rates of enamel dissolution were accounted for in a consistent fashion. Gray deduced a semi-empirical equation for the rate of dissolution which rather satisfactorily describes all the experimental findings. This relationship includes the bufferacid dissociation constant, the total buffer concentration, the hydrogen-ion concentration, and other terms, when necessary, for common and foreign ions affecting the rate. The success of this equation suggested that detailed mathematical models could be formulated and tested, employing simultaneous diffusion and chemical reaction, as has been done in describing the dissolution behavior of benzoic acid2 in basic and buffered media. The present communication is a report on the study of two such models. These have been examined with Gray's data. The analyses demonstrate the usefulness of this approach in future studies on dental problems.

Effects of buffering properties and undissociated acid concentration on dissolution of dental enamel in relation to pH and acid type.

To quantify the relationships between buffering properties and acid erosion and hence improve models of erosive potential of acidic drinks, a pH-stat was used to measure the rate of enamel dissolution in solutions of citric, malic and lactic acids, with pH 2.4-3.6 and with acid concentrations adjusted to give buffer capacities (β) of 2-40 (mmol·l(-1))·pH(-1) for each pH. The corresponding undis...

Quantitation of enamel demineralization mechanisms. 3. A critical examination of the hydroxyapatite model.

A physical model which assumes that hydroxyapatite is the thermodynamic governing phase for the acid dissolution-rate behavior of enamel has been critically examined theoretically and experimentally. Both enamel powder and synthetic hydroxyapatite initial dissolution-rate experiments were conducted under various conditions of acid-butler type and concentration, pH, and common ion concentrations.

High-speed atomic force microscopy of dental enamel dissolution in citric acid.

High-speed atomic force microscopy (HS AFM) in 'contact' mode was used to image at video rate the surfaces of both calcium hydroxyapatite samples, often used as artificial dental enamel in such experiments, and polished actual bovine dental enamel in both neutral and acidic aqueous environments. The image in each frame of the video of the sample was a few micrometers square, and the high-speed ...

Two-site model for human dental enamel dissolution in EDTA.

Dissolution of tooth enamel and of hydroxyapatite (HAP) in buffered solutions of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) has been studied in this laboratory by the physical model approach. To quantitatively explain the experimental results, it was necessary to develop a model incorporating two different types of crystalline sites for dissolution. In a previous study using a one-site diffusion la...

Kinetics and mechanism of hydroxyapatite crystal dissolution in weak acid buffers using the rotating disk method.

The model given in this report and the rotating disk method provide a useful combination in the study of dental enamel and hydroxyapatite dissolution kinetics. The present approach is a significant improvement over earlier studies, and both the ionic activity product that governs the dissolution reaction and the apparent surface dissolution reaction rate constant may be simultaneously obtained....
